Taiwanese Mandopop singer-songwriter Valen Hsu will show off her trademark wispy yet crystal-clear voice at a show Dec. 30 at Shenzhen Bay Sports Center.
Hsu is known for her sad love ballads. In 1998, the Japanese magazine Asia Pop voted her as the best female pop vocalist in Asia. Occasionally she also plays piano while singing live at her concerts.
From 1995 to 2000, Hsu recorded 14 studio albums and significantly changed her career. Her fourth album, “Sunlight Airport” in 1998, sold over 3 million copies in Asia, permanently placing her in the company of Asian divas such as Faye Wong and Sandy Lam and becoming an integral part of a new Mandopop era including Coco Lee and A-Mei.
In 1999, she recorded a duet with Enrique Iglesias entitled “You’re My No. 1,” released on Iglesias’ Asian version of his “Enrique” album.
In 2001, she decided to broaden her career by acting in TV dramas. She furthered her acting career in 2003 by performing on stage with Zuni Icosahedron, an independent cultural collective concentrating on alternative theater and multimedia performances.
In 2010, Hsu set up her own music studio, Valen Voice Production.
