Old buildings
TWO apartment buildings funded by the city government 20 years ago at the intersection of Fanshen Road and Xin’an Road in Bao’an District are said to be on the verge of collapse.
The two buildings, suspected to have been constructed using sea sand and built on land reclaimed from the sea, ran into quality problems in 1997, two years after first being occupied. Occupants of some of the buildings in the housing estate were evacuated after the structures they were in were designated as dangerous.
According to some of the current occupants, all 18 buildings of the Xinle housing estate are hazardous, but Bao’an’s construction bureau did not release the results of its study two years after it had assessed the quality of the buildings.
