THE fourth Shenzhen International Percussion Festival kicked off in Futian District yesterday, a special activity that is part of the upcoming 10th China (Shenzhen) International Cultural Industries Fair (ICIF).
Percussionists from home and abroad will stage various performances at Shenzhen Children’s Palace and Futian Cultural Center between May 15 and 18.
The performances include two Chinese drum musicals, a modern Latin percussion show and a percussion culture exhibition, the organizers said at yesterday’s launching ceremony.
Among the artists who will perform in the festival are Gugu Percussion Ensemble from Shanghai, Charles Foldesh from the United States, Dominic Bautista from the Philippines and Leonardo Susi from Brazil.
Founded in October 2007, Gugu Percussion Ensemble is one of top Chinese percussion ensembles, composed of young, talented artists. They are responsible for creating China’s first ethnic drum show, dubbed “China Dream,” which premiered last year. The ensemble plans to stage the musical in Shenzhen as well.
Born in Arizona, Foldesh started playing drums at the age of 10 and later became a musician. He gained a master’s degree at Oberlin College’s Conservatory of Music.
Foldesh has performed in music festivals worldwide, from North America to Europe, and South America to Asia.
“Vibrant percussion music matches Shenzhen’s reputation as a city of youth,” said vice chairman of Shenzhen Art Association, Leng Bingbing, at the launching ceremony.
Funded by the Futian District Government, the annual percussion festival has witnessed a rapid growth in the number of visitors. The first festival only saw about 5,000 visitors, but last year that number reached 50,000, according to official statistics.
“It’s our target to spread the joy of modern rhythm to everyone,” said Zhan Minghui, initiator of the percussion festival and founder of Shenzhen Percussion Association.
The association was established May 3.
“The rhythm is in your blood. Once you get a sense of rhythm by exploring your life, the more passion and harmony you will possess,” said Zhan.
