    When rubber hits the road

    一旦开始行动

    这个短语的字面解释是“当橡胶撞上路面”,这是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: So you have registered for the upcoming marathon. You are a serious runner.

B: Yes, I am. I've been training my body for years so that I could win the upcoming marathon, but tomorrow, when the race actually begins, that is when the rubber hits the road and I will find out how conditioned I really am.

Note: This idiom means "when something is about to begin, get serious, or be put to the test." What drives on the road? Cars, of course! Well, there's also trucks, motorcycles, and bikes too. All of these vehicles have one thing in common. They have wheels, wheels made out of rubber. So this phrase, originating from auto racing, is referencing a car's rubber wheels making contact with the road.

    记住了吗?When rubber hits the road就是“一旦开始行动”。
