逗比
     2014-May-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Meaning:

“逗” means to “tease” as a verb or “funny” as an adjective. “比” literally means “than,” but here is a euphemism for another character with similar pronunciation used in cursing that refers to women’s private part. Often used by Chinese netizens, “逗比” means “hilarious” or “hilariously stupid.” It refers to people who are very funny and a little stupid. It can be offensive to call a stranger “逗比,” but close friends may use the term in a joking manner.

    Example:

    A: 对面的男孩经常站在阳台上,朝着我家方向低头玩手机,偶尔看到我会抬头对我羞涩一笑,然后继续玩手机。你说他是不是暗恋我呀?

Duìmiàn de nánhái jīngcháng zhàn zài yángtái shàng, cháo zhe wǒjiā fāngxiàng dītóu wán shǒujī, ǒu’ér kàndào wǒ huì táitóu duì wǒ xīusè yīyào, ránhòu jìxù wán shǒujī。Nǐ shuō tā shìbùshì ànliàn wǒ ya?

The boy in the opposite apartment often stands on the veranda, facing my apartment and playing on his smartphone. When he sees me, he would raise his head and smile to me shyly. Then he would continue playing on his phone. Do you think he has a crush on me?

    B: 你是不是逗比啊?他一定是在蹭你的无线网。

Nǐ shìbùshì dòubǐ a? Tā yīdìng shì zài cèng nǐ de wúxiànwǎng。

Are you being funny? He must be using your Wi-Fi for free.
