补刀
     2014-June-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Meaning:

“补” means to “add,” and “刀,” which literally means “knife,” can be understood as a “stab” in this context. Frequently used by player of popular game “World of Warcraft,” this term originally means to give a dying enemy or soldier of one’s own side the last hit in order to plunder his weapons or prevent enemies from robbing one’s own soldier’s weapons. Chinese netizens have expanded the usage of this term to mean “attacking someone who’s already under fire.”

    Example:

    A: 最近有什么热门八卦消息?

Zuìjìn yǒu shénme rèmén bāguà xiāoxi?

    What’s the hottest gossip now?

    B: 女星黄奕和老公离婚骂战。最好笑的

    是,黄的前夫、前情敌和其他女明星都纷纷跳出来补刀。

Nǚxīng huángyì hé lǎogōng líhūn màzhàn。Zuì hǎoxiào de shì, huáng de qiānfū、qián qíngdí hé qítā nǚ míngxīng dōu fēnfēn tiào chūlái bǔdāo。

Actress Huang Yi is having an escalating marriage dispute with her estranged husband. The funny thing is: Huang’s ex-husband, ex-rival in love and other actresses all came out to attack her.

    A: 这么多人补刀,看来黄奕不招人待见啊。

Zhème duō rén bǔdāo, kànlái huángyǐ bù zhāoréndàijiàn a。

So many people attack her while she’s down. It’s obvious that people find her annoying.
