Meaning:
“土” means “local” in this context, “食” means “food,” and “族” refers to a group of people sharing similarities. This term, borrowed from English, means “locavore.” The English word was the word of the year for 2007 in the Oxford American Dictionary. The suffix “vore” comes from the Latin word vorare (to devour), and is used to form nouns indicating what kind of a diet an animal has. Coined by Jessica Prentice of the San Francisco Bay Area in 2005, a locavore refers to a person interested in eating food that is locally produced, not moved long distances to market. One common — but not universal — definition of “local” food is food grown within 160 kilometers of its point of purchase or consumption.
