FOUR people will face trial for their alleged involvement in a terrorist attack at a railway station in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, on March 1, China’s top procuratorate announced yesterday.
The Supreme People’s Procuratorate alleged that the suspects were involved in either organizing, leading or taking part in the terrorist attack, as well as intentional homicide.
A group of assailants armed with knives attacked civilians at the railway station, causing 29 deaths and injuring another 143. Police shot to death four of the attackers at the station and arrested four others.
Iskandar Ehet, Turgun Tohtunyaz and Hasayn Muhammad are accused of leading a terrorist organization and planning the attack.
Patigul Tohti is accused of being involved in organizing and executing the killings.
Authorities had laid out the charges in March, but have now formally filed them, paving the way for an imminent trial. The four defendants are likely to be given the death penalty.
The Kunming attack was one of the single deadliest terror attacks this year. A suicide bombing in May killed 39 people at a market in Xinjiang’s capital, Urumqi.(Xinhua)
