WALMART is staging a promotion on yogurt that is expected to help increase the world’s largest retailer’s sales by 360 million yuan (US$58.06 million) before the promotion ends in October.

More than 20 domestic brands, including leading players Yili and Mengniu, are participating in the promotion. Discounts up to 20 percent are being offered in Walmart stores across the country, the retailer said in a press release yesterday.

“Summer is the peak season for yogurt sales,” said Wan Xuemei, senior manager with Walmart China’s purchasing department. “Yogurt is gaining popularity in China, especially among young consumers.”

Walmart stores will also collect consumer feedback on different yogurt brands. “Walmart is our largest retail client,” said Li Hai, deputy general manager of Yili’s enterprise department. “We expect our sales at Walmart stores in China to exceed 300 million yuan this year.”
