    SHENZHEN was ranked No. 1 in innovation and urban environment among all cities in China, according to Hong Kong-based think tank, China Institute of City Competitiveness (CICC), which has conducted research on the competitiveness of Chinese cities and released annual reports since 1998.

    This year’s rankings are based on research conducted by more than 100 experts and scholars on 34 provinces, municipalities and regions, as well as 358 cities above prefecture level.

    In the innovation category, researchers evaluated cities based on innovation in economics, politics, science, education and culture. Ranking below Shenzhen, in a descending order, are Suzhou, Hefei, Tianjin and Guangzhou.

    For the environment category, researchers evaluated cities based on urban planning, infrastructure, architecture, civility and natural environment. Shenzhen was followed by Hangzhou, Qingdao, Lhasa and Huizhou.

    Among other categories, Shenzhen was placed at sixth in competitiveness in science and technology.

    Beijing topped the ranking in scientific and technological competitiveness, followed by Shanghai and Hong Kong.

    Shenzhen only ranked seventh in human resources and education competitiveness.

    In addition, Shenzhen did not appear in the top 10 cities for good investment climate.

    Shenzhen Mayor Xu Qin was listed fifth in one of the more interesting categories — outstanding city politicians. City leaders were evaluated for their performances concerning urban planning, construction, management and leadership.

    Guangdong was ranked first in comprehensive competitiveness while Hong Kong was listed sixth in this category.
