LI HUIJI, 90, who lives in an old folk’s home in Shenzhen, donated 2,000 yuan (US$317) from her monthly 2,800 yuan pension to Shenzhen Red Cross on Tuesday, hoping to do her bit for children in the earthquake-hit Yunnan Province.

She was one of many local residents, along with companies, who rushed to donate money and relief materials to Yunnan after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake jolted the province Sunday.

At 10 a.m. yesterday, another resident, Zhao Wangshang, drove more than one hour from Fuyong, Bao’an District, to Shenzhen Red Cross and donated 28,900 yuan, which he had collected from 66 friends and relatives.

According to Red Cross employees, Zhao, an employee of a machinery factory, once donated 50,000 yuan after Sichuan Province’s Ya’an suffered an earthquake in April last year.

The charity also received 2,000 moisture-proof mattresses from Shenzhen Changyuan Shareholding Co. yesterday. By 2 p.m. yesterday, it had received 235,000 yuan.

Zhu Qike, a businessman who has worked in Shenzhen for 20 years, donated 1 million yuan after he learned that his hometown Zhaotong was hit by the earthquake.

Zhu is the head of Zhaotong Business Chamber of Commerce in Guangdong. He has been busy these past few days organizing Zhaotong people in Guangdong to donate. The chamber raised 1.5 million yuan from its members and the fund will be used for post-quake reconstruction.

According to Shenzhen Charity Foundation, tents, raincoats, quilts and clothes are badly needed in the quake-hit region.

Shenzhen International Airport opened a green passage by giving priority to disaster relief cargo to Yunnan. A total of 800 kg of goods provided by Shenzhen telecommunications enterprises were delivered to the Changshui airport in Kunming yesterday.

Shenzhen One Foundation raised 8.57 million yuan in 48 hours after the earthquake and Shenzhen Blue Sky Rescue Team, in partnership with the foundation, arrived at the quake region and started rescue work yesterday.

The foundation sent 3,000 bags of rice and 3,000 bottles of cooking oil to the region.

Tencent donated 5 million yuan after the quake and its online donation platform raised 6.3 million yuan.

At a ceremony Tuesday, Nanlingcun Community in Longgang District donated 2 million yuan to Yunnan and another 2 million yuan to Hainan and Zhanjiang in southwestern Guangdong, which were affected by a recent typhoon. Residents in the village also donated 270,000 yuan to Yunnan.

Residents who want to help quake victims in Yunnan Province can donate to Shenzhen Charity Foundation.
