A MOTORIST, surnamed Chen, who fled from an accident scene after knocking down a pedestrian on Luofang Overpass in Luohu District on Sunday, has been detained, Luohu police said.

The victim, a 31-year-old man surnamed Song, was a taxi driver who was walking home after having just finished his night shift.

During interrogation, Chen claimed he didn’t know he had rolled over a pedestrian, insisting that he thought he had hit a fence. Surveillance footage showed that Chen got out of his car to check what he had hit, lingering for a minute before he left. Police received a report from witnesses at 5:54 a.m. and Chen called police at around 6 a.m., claiming he had knocked down a fence.

According to traffic laws, the deceased Song could be judged partially responsible for the accident because he was breaking the law by walking on the overpass. If, however, the court proves Chen fled from the scene, he would bear full responsibility.

In related news, Longhua police also detained a driver Thursday who fled the scene of an accident the day before that injured a motorist and damaged three vehicles on Qingquan Road. (Han Ximin)
