Bulky luggage carriers urged to use elevators
     2014-August-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN North Railway Station suggested that passengers with large luggage items use elevators instead of escalators to decrease the chances of an accident, after 10 people were injured from falling down an upward-moving escalator at the station Saturday night.

A middle-aged woman failed to move her suitcase in a timely manner, leading it to become lodged at the escalator’s exit, according to yesterday’s report by Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, citing a witness, surnamed Wang.

The person behind her was blocked by the suitcase when trying to alight and fell down, causing a domino effect of people falling onto each other.

Nine people suffered minor injuries and one child had to receive stitches at a hospital, the paper said.

According to related rules, passengers with bulky luggage should use elevators at the station. However, most people prefer the escalator, according to the station.

The station has installed many signs next to lifts and sent staff to persuade, guide and evacuate passengers if necessary.(Martin Li, Chen Yue)
