闭嘴

    Sock是“短袜”，put a sock in it是什么意思呢？请看对话：

    A: Hey, you are still sitting there playing games! Didn’t you promise to take the garbage out half an hour ago?

    B: Will you put a sock in it already? I told you that I’d take the garbage out later when the temperature cools off.

    Note: This is an impolite way of telling someone to be quiet. The origins for this expression are unclear. It’s not really known why a “sock” is being used in the idiom. “It” here may have been the horn of an early gramophone or, more straightforwardly, the raucous person’s mouth. The imagery for this is that someone is being so noisy, and a sock is stuffed into their mouths in order to quiet them down. The phrase began to pop up at least as early as the 20th century, and it was already sporting the meaning it has today.
