A drop in the bucket
     2014-September-11  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    沧海一粟

    Bucket是“水桶”,a drop in the bucket是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Let’s have dinner together today. A friend recommended a very good restaurant, and I haven’t had time to try it yet.

B: I’m not sure when I can get off the hook. I did a lot of work this morning, but I have so much to do it was just a drop in the bucket. I’ll take a rain check.

Note: A drop in the bucket means “a small, and thereby relatively insignificant, part of a whole.” The idiom may have come from the Bible, where the original text says: “Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance.” A similar saying is “a drop in the ocean,” which appeared later than “a drop in the bucket.”

    记住了吗?A drop in the bucket就是“沧海一粟”。
