Beijing ballad singer Song Dongye will give a solo concert Sept. 27 at the Shenzhen Concert Hall.
Song, 27, is known for his deep voice and powerful lyrics on life in Beijing. Born and raised in Beijing, he sings about various social phenomena and romance. During his college years, Song wrote and self-recorded many ballads and posted them on Chinese social networking website Douban. Song attracted a large fanbase online and signed with Beijing label Modern Sky in 2012.
His single “Miss Dong” was released in Modern Sky’s 15th anniversary compilation album “Modern Sky 7” on Dec. 27, 2012. In an interview with Shenzhen press at Sisyphe Bookstore in The MixC, he said his song was based on a conversation with a female photographer friend who looks subtle, but has a strong heart due to her life experiences that are very different from everyone else’s.
Although “Miss Dong” had been popular among youngsters for some time, it didn’t reach the broader public until Zuo Li, a contestant on “Happy Boy,” a national TV singing contest, covered the song in 2013. The song is a ballad, but Song said he might remix it with heavy metal for the Shenzhen show.
Song released his first studio album, “North of Anhe Bridge,” in August 2013, and, thanks to his musical talents, he was invited to collaborate with movie star Maggie Cheung for her upcoming album. Cheung is also a Modern Sky singer.
