Thumbstopper
     2014-September-25  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    网络热点

    Thumb是“拇指”,stopper是“阻止者”。这个词是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: What’s up? You look very excited.

B: I heard some breaking news from my informant. It would definitely become a thumbstopper tomorrow once I post it.

    A: What’s it about?

B: The film actress, you know whom, has rekindled her relationship with an ex-boyfriend.

Note: A thumbstopper refers to an eye-catching or compelling item that makes a person stop scrolling through a list of posts, particularly when using the thumb to scroll a touchscreen device. A lot of news items have become thumbstoppers in China lately, such as celebrities using drugs or being involved in prostitution, and high-ranking officials being investigated for graft. Previously we have introduced other phrases with “thumb” in them. For example, a thumb candy is a computer game that’s all hand-eye coordination with little strategy or thought required.
