Meaning:

    “走” means to “walk,” “读” means to “read,” and “干部” means “officials.” “走读” originally refers to the practice of going to a boarding school or university with dormitories but returning home after school every day. This term is used to criticize Chinese grassroots officials who work for township or county governments but live in cities where the infrastructure is better and life is more comfortable. These officials commute to work every day, similar to students who don’t live on campus. People also call them “migrant officials.”

    Example:

    A: 这条新闻说中国最近查处了六千多名走读干部。

    Zhètiáo xīnwén shuō zhōngguó zuìjìn cháchǔ le lìuqiānduō míng zǒudú gànbù。

    This piece of news says the Chinese Government recently punished more than 6,000 “migrant officials.”
