败家

    bàijiā

    Meaning: "败" means "fail, lose," and "家" means "family." Originally "败家" referred to the circumstances where people do nothing useful and foolishly spend away the fortune their previous generations had accumulated. However, Chinese netizens have used the term in more light-hearted situations as an exaggerated way to say "going on a shopping spree."

    A: 双十一败家排行榜出来了，猜猜哪里排名靠前？

    Shuāng shíyī bàijiā páihángbǎng chūlái le, cāicāi nǎlǐ páimíng kàoqián?

    A Singles Day spending list has come out, guess which provinces are on the front?

    I have no idea.

    A: 广东、浙江、江苏、上海。

    Guǎngdōng、zhéjiāng、jiāngsū、shànghǎi。

    Yǐhòu zhǎo nǚpéngyǒu kě bié zhǎo zhè jǐgè dìfāng de。

    So one had better not find girlfriends from these regions.

    A: 其实是因为这些地方经济发达，购买力强。

    Qíshí shì yīnwèi zhèxiē dìfāng jīngjì fādá, gòumǎilì qiáng。

    In fact, people in these regions spent more because these are the more developed, where people have a stronger purchasing power.
