    Ask for the moon

    非分之想

    Moon就是“月亮”,ask for是“要求”。这个词组是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Sophie was not quite her usual happy self this week. Do you know what happened?

B: She went to talk with the boss Monday, asking for a two-week holiday.

A: And the boss said no?

B: Of course he said no. She's asking for the moon at this time of the year, when everyone is busy handling the Singles Day sales!

Note: Everybody knows that the moon is a planet, which you can have no chance of keeping it for yourself. Even ancient people could understand how out of reach it was for them. So, this idiom means to "make outlandish requests or demands for something, such as a lot of money or special privileges." It's often used in continuous tenses. For example: There's no point hoping for a permanent peace in the area. It's like asking for the moon.
