Survive the cut
     2014-November-17  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Survive是“生存”,“cut”是“切口、削减、剪裁”。Survive the cut是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: How was your campus cup tennis game last week?

B: Thank God, I survived the cut and now I am preparing for the finals.

Note: The “cut” is most frequently seen in professional golf tournaments. It means elimination. Professional golf, for instance, consists of four rounds of play. In the beginning, 64 players take part. After two rounds, the field is cut (reduced) to half, i.e. only 32 players are allowed to move on to the final two rounds. That means 32 other players with the worst scores are eliminated, or cut, as in cutting the cake in half with a knife. The idiom can be used in many circumstances to mean a person is allowed to advance further in a competition.
