A FEMALE major general is under investigation by the procuratorial authorities of China’s military forces for suspicion of bribery, financial news magazine Caixin reported Thursday.
Gao Xiaoyan served as political commissar and discipline inspector of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Information Engineering University before being taken away by military prosecutors Nov. 27. Her house was searched and sealed off, Caixin said.
She was the first female general to be snared since China’s drastic anti-corruption campaign was launched in 2012.
Gao is suspected of taking bribes related to a number of construction projects when she served as political commissar at the 309th Hospital of the PLA from 2005 to 2012.
Caixin said Gao joined the army in 1974 at the age of 17 and mostly held political posts during her career, becoming one of just a few women to hold such a senior position.
