Firm develops world’s thinnest flexible display
     2014-December-16  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SHENZHEN company has developed the world’s thinnest AMOLED flexible display just two years after it was established, Shenzhen Special Zone Daily reported.

The cutting-edge technology, a flexible 0.01mm display, comes from Royole Corp., a start-up based out of High-tech Industrial Park in Nanshan District. It founder, Liu Zihong, a Stanford University Ph.D., came to Shenzhen in 2012 to set up a team focusing on novel display technologies and related electronics.

Liu is reportedly an overachiever in academics. Soon after his admission to Tsinghua University in 2000, he exhibited extraordinary gifts in technological invention. His invention of a human biosensor chip won him the top prize in a national university science competition.

Liu said that he set his sights on flexible display technology while studying in the United States. After finishing his Ph.D., he took an unrelated job at a Fortune 500 company in New York, but kept working on his research. He said he was waiting for the right time to start up his own enterprise. “I hope my innovation can inspire more people and create more value for our society,” he said.

The high-performance display technology will allow portable electronics, wearable electronics and many other applications to be crafted into diversified shapes by freeing them from the limits of flat screens.

At present, Royole’s display screen is being manufactured on a small scale in Shenzhen and the United States and will go into mass production next year, as many globally renowned companies are seeking to team up with Liu’s company. Royole has applied for hundreds of patents for its core technologies.

The company has research and development centers in Shenzhen and Silicon Valley. Liu said he chose Shenzhen as a base because the city has a fully developed supply system due to its adjacency to Hong Kong and its internationalized business environment.

“Innovation is not something that is realized through speeches but action. It is creating new value, not for the sake of innovation,” Liu said.
