TWO scientists were conferred with the Shenzhen Mayor’s Award, the city’s top prize in science and technology, at an award ceremony Thursday.
Cai Zhiming, president with Shenzhen No. 2 People’s Hospital, and Fan Jianping, head of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, each won the 500,000 yuan (US$79,400) award for their work in 2013.
Cai, who had worked in both the clinical and research sides of medicine for more than 30 years, and his team had made a breakthrough in cancer treatment called cell therapy, which can kill cancer-causing cells through the cultivation of lymph cells.
They made 12 discoveries considered cutting edge on the world stage and published 188 articles in leading science magazines including Science, Nature and Cell. Cai’s research enabled doctors to check for bladder cancer with a drop of urine. With the technology, a project to screen millions of high risk bladder cancer patients was launched worldwide.
Fan’s research covers high- performance computing, grid computing and computer architecture. He took part in the development of a series of the Dawning supercomputers.
He constructs innovative operation mechanisms by combining research, education, industry and capital.
