Down for the count
被打倒、失败
Down是“倒下”,count是“计数”。Down for the count是什么意思呢?请看对话:
A: Did John win the chess game?
B: I didn't stay for the results. But after a bad chess move, he would be down for the count for sure.
Note: The idiom means "defeated, finished, doomed." In a boxing match, when a player is knocked down on the floor or canvas, the referee steps in to take a count from one to eight. According to rules, if the boxer is able to stand up before the count to eight, he's allowed to continue to fight. Otherwise he loses the match, with victory going to the winner, who is described as winning by KO, or knockout. These boxing phrases have been accepted into general language, including "KO," "down for the count," "down and out" and more encouragingly, "down but not out."
