String someone along
     2015-January-19  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    “String”是“用绳栓”,“along”是“沿着、一道”。这个短语是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Are you coming to our soccer game this weekend?

    B: I am in.

A: Your girlfriend can cheer on us.

B: I’m not sure. It seems like she’s happy, but whenever I bring up our future she changes the subject. I bought her a diamond necklace last week and she told me she loved me. But then she said she’s busy this weekend. Do you think she’s just stringing me along?

Note: People would string farm animals along and lead them in a certain direction. To string someone along means to “maintain someone’s attention or interest, probably insincerely.” The idiom can also mean to “keep someone waiting or in a state of uncertainty.” For example: The company strung along the job candidate for two weeks before hiring someone else.
