‘Zombie vehicle’ towed away
     2015-January-23  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A CAR that was left unattended at a roadside parking place for more than 10 days was towed away by police Wednesday after its owner failed to pay parking fees.

It is the first car with traffic violations to be towed away by the traffic authorities since the city started collecting roadside parking fees earlier this month.

The vehicle, known in Chinese as a zombie car, had a record of more than three traffic violations and had been parked illegally on the road near the Shirble Department Store in Jingtian, Futian District, for more than 10 days.

The center had issued three parking tickets to the car owner since Jan. 12, and the traffic police officers have uploaded the information to the police department’s database, but the driver neither moved the car nor paid the fines.

According to the new rule, the driver now needs to pay at least 3,090 yuan (US$497) — 1,500 yuan in fines for illegal parking and 1,590 yuan for the parking fees, which were doubled because of overdue payment.

Between Jan. 12 and 18, the center fined 8,712 drivers for illegal parking.
