Atkinson puts huge price tag on McLaren
     2015-January-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

MR BEAN has gone Mr Big with a whopping multi-million-dollar price tag on his rare crash-repaired McLaren F1 supercar.

Rowan Atkinson, the star of such comedy series as “Black Adder” and “Mr Bean,” bought the car in 1997 for “just” £540,000 (US$810,081) but it was revealed at the weekend that he was now asking a breath-taking £8 million for the vehicle.

Britain’s Western Daily Press reported that the car — twice crashed by Atkinson — has been put for sale with luxury London car dealer Taylor and Crawley.

The second of the McLaren’s two crashes resulted in what is believed to the U.K.’s biggest ever single car insurance payout. In that incident Atkinson lost control on a slippery bend and smashed into a tree with such force the engine was reportedly ripped out. It took McLaren’s special ops engineers a month to figure out the repair costs and then another 12 months to complete the rebuild at a cost of NZ$1.97 million (US$1.4 million).

The insurance company pushed ahead with the rebuild of the car — only 64 road-going versions were built — after their value had soared in recent years with one selling for NZ$6.5 million in 2012.

David Clark, the owner of Taylor and Crawley, believes the history of the car adds value to the sale.

“If I had the choice of buying a 1,000-mile (1,609-km) McLaren F1 that has been hidden away or Rowan’s with 41,000 miles I would take Rowan’s,” he said.

“It has the interesting history and this is what people look for. A lot of cars are indicative of the people who own them and a lot of serious car collectors own an F1 and that gives it great credibility. Jay Leno has one, Ralph Lauren has more than one.

“But the F1 is at its best on the road. That is where you get the most enjoyment.”

The McLaren F1 is predominantly carbon fiber, packs a 6.1-liter V12 engine and is good for 0-100kmh in about 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 388 kilometers per hour.(SD-Agencies)
