On ice
     2015-January-27  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    On ice字面解释是“在冰上”,这个短语是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: What would you like to have? I have beer, orange juice and soda on ice. I can also make you hot coffee or tea.

B: I’ll have orange juice. You are kind of on vacation, buddy. What’s up?

A: My boss promised me a promotion, which needs approval from the company headquarters. The promotion has been on ice for a week while it is being debated.

Note: Literally, “on ice” means “being stored or preserved on ice or under refrigeration.” Figuratively, it means “(action on someone or something) being suspended or left hanging.” Another slang usage of the phrase can mean “in prison.” For example: He’s been on ice for 10 years.
