渡边太太
dùbiān tàitài
Meaning: "渡边" is a popular Japanese surname, and "太太" means "Mrs." Mrs. Watanabe is a generic name for the Japanese housewife, who seeks the best use of her family's savings. Though historically risk-averse, Mrs. Watanabe became a surprisingly big player in currency trading during the past decade in order to combat low interest rates in Japan since the 1990s. They have become actively involved in the carry trade, a form of speculation in which investors borrow a low-cost currency like the yen and buy high-growth currency, netting a profit.
Example:
A: 为什么人民币汇率大跌?
Wèishénme rénmínbì huìlǜ dàdiē?
What's the reason for the quick depreciation of yuan?
B: 很多因素。一是中国政府似乎容忍人民币适度贬值以提振经济发展,二是欧元区的宽松货币政策导致欧元兑美元贬值,还有渡边太太从日元人民币的套利交易撤离。
Hěnduō yīnsù。Yī shì zhōngguó zhèngfǔ sìhū róngrěn rénmínbì shìdù biǎnzhí yǐ tízhèn jīngjì fāzhǎn, èr shì ōuyuánqū de kuānsōng huòbì zhèngcè dǎozhì ōuyuán duì měiyuán biǎnzhí, háiyǒu dùbiān tàitài cóng rìyuán rénmínbì de tàolì jiāoyì chèlí。
Many factors are in the play. The Chinese Government seems tolerant towards moderate yuan depreciation to boost economy; quantitative easing in the Eurozone has boosted the price of U.S. dollars; Japanese housewives are also evacuating from the yuan carry trade.
