Armed riot police gather outside the Kaohsiung Prison in southern Taiwan city of Kaohsiung yesterday. Six prison inmates, who were believed to be armed, took three staff hostage at the jail, demanding a getaway. They were apparently disgruntled about how the prison is run, including inmates’ NT$200 (US$6.4) monthly allowance, as well as the release of former Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian on medical parole last month, the United Daily News reported.
