BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH is a married man.
The 38-year-old “Imitation Game” star tied the knot with theater director Sophie Hunter on England’s Isle of Wight on Saturday, making it a Valentine’s Day to remember.
The private ceremony took place at St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, a 12th century structure in the town of Mottistone, with a reception at the centuries-old Mottistone Manor. It’s believed to have been a small affair, with a local report saying approximately 40 guests arrived at the church Saturday.
Already the U.K. papers were having fun with the “Sherlock” star’s big day. Saturday’s edition of The Sun has a photo of the couple with the caption, “Wedlock Holmes,” and the subheadline, “Case of Secret Ceremony.”
Cumberbatch and Hunter have been relatively under-the-radar throughout their relationship, largely avoiding being photographed together until this year’s awards season.
The pair had announced their engagement in a decidedly old-fashioned way, posting a classified ad in the British newspaper The Times in November 2014. News broke in January that they are expecting their first child.
Cumberbatch and Hunter, 36, had been dating for a year prior to their engagement. This is the first marriage for both and is likely to disappoint the Oscar-nominated actor’s legions of female fans.(SD-Agencies)
