Land subsidence occurs near Metro line construction site
     2015-March-2  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE surface of the road at the intersection between Dongmen Road South and Chunfeng Road in Luohu District collapsed around 2 a.m. Saturday, possibly due to nearby Metro construction.

The collapse took place near the construction site of Metro Line 9. No casualties were reported, but one trailer became partly stuck in the hole, which measured about 5 square meters, with one of its wheels falling in. The collapse was about 3 meters deep and in a spot where various pipes intertwine.

A crane at the construction site helped remove the trailer from the hole after removing its equipment.

Workers from the district’s emergency office, gas, electricity and water supply departments arrived at the scene after the incident and found no immediate threats, such as damage to pipes and leaking.

One of the surveyors in the field told a reporter from the Southern Metropolis Daily that the construction of Line 9 near the intersection might have caused the incident since the hole already existed before the collapse.

The Metro construction project contractor later filled in the hole with concrete, covered the hole with a steel board and blocked off the scene.

A spokesperson from Shenzhen Metro Group said they covered the hole right after the incident because it was too dangerous to leave it exposed in the downtown area.

The cause of the incident is being investigated.
