ADVISORY BODY ‘NO HARBOR FOR CORRUPT OFFICIALS’
     2015-March-3  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THE national political advisory body is no harbor for corrupt officials, its spokesman said in Beijing yesterday, ahead of its annual session that opens today.

The National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) fully supports the investigation into those corrupt officials who have violated rules and might break the law, spokesman Lyu Xinhua said at a press conference.

Two former vice chairmen of the CPPCC National Committee, Ling Jihua and Su Rong, have been suspected of corruption and investigated accordingly.

Su is being investigated by the Supreme People’s Procuratorate over allegations of abusing power over personnel appointments and the operation of unidentified companies and taking an enormous amount of bribes.

A CPPCC meeting Saturday removed Ling from the post of vice chairman and also stripped him of the CPPCC membership.

Although most of their violations did not occur during their tenure as leading national political advisers, the cases have affected the image of the CPPCC, Lyu said.

The CPPCC would upgrade integrity overhaul and anti-corruption measures, he said.

“The anti-corruption campaign is what honest members of the Communist Party of China and the general public welcome and support, with which a victory would be achieved,” he said.

At 3 p.m. today, the CPPCC National Committee will open its annual session at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Yu Zhengsheng, chairman of the CPPCC National Committee, will deliver a report on the work undertaken by the CPPCC National Committee’s Standing Committee during the past year.

On Thursday, the annual session of China’s top legislature will open.

More than 5,000 national lawmakers and political advisors are expected to gather in Beijing for the yearly events. They will be discussing policies and coming up with proposals to steer the world’s largest economy forward.
