Former district chief freed from prison
     2015-March-3  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A FORMER district chief in Shenzhen who was sentenced to life in prison in 2001 for corruption was released from prison two weeks ago after seven commutations of his sentence.

Former Party chief of Nanshan and Bao’an districts, Yu Dehai, 70, was granted commutation seven times because of his good behavior in prison, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

He abided by rules in prison and actively took part in study and labor activities, which earned him several rewards, according to the newspaper.

The top court in Guangdong Province first commuted Yu’s prison term to eighteen years in August 2004, which was followed by another six commutations.

Yu had his prison sentence shortened by another three months and 21 days in January and his life behind bars ended Feb. 15.

A Hubei Province native, Yu came to Shenzhen in 1979 as chief of China’s first Sino-foreign joint venture in Shekou. He was later promoted to positions such as chief of Shenzhen’s organization department, and Party chief of Nanshan and Bao’an districts.

He stayed in the leadership position in Nanshan for eight years, during which his district government spent a huge amount of money on cultural development, including compiling and publishing a sequel of an ancient Chinese classics.

In addition, he took advantage of his power in Nanshan to take more than 1.53 million yuan (US$244,800) in bribes.

He also possessed more than HK$5 million (US$644,500) which he failed to inform his source about during the investigation.

He was arrested Oct. 11, 1999 and given the life sentence by Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court in December 2001.
