Forum held on intelligent development

MORE than 300 scientific researchers from China and abroad gathered in Longgang District on Saturday to attend an international forum on intelligent transportation technology.

The forum, called “Intelligent System: City, Information and Robots,” was held on the Shenzhen campus of The Chinese University of Hong Kong and was organized by The Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Audiences were amazed by the inventions shown on a big screen. Unmanned vehicles, face identification systems and a medical database got attention.

Academics, professors and other science researchers from China, the United States, Australia, Japan and other countries presented developments in engineering and intelligent systems.

Professor Takeo Kanade of Carnegie Mellon University, who is also from the National Academy of Engineering in the United States, delivered a speech on a cutting-edge headlight technology. Using a theory of reflection, his team has designed a special headlight that will make it easier to see while driving in the rain.

Using the same theory, Kanade is trying to create a headlight that works as a high beam for the driver, but looks like a regular headlight to anyone else on the road.

Other professors demonstrated an advanced visualization system for robots. The system would allow robots to do complex and precise tasks such as treating poisoned starfish with injections.

“The intelligent system is a tremendous and highly interdisciplinary subject that has affects human beings immensely. It prevails in every aspect of our lives,” said Chen Zuoning, vice president of The Chinese Academy of Engineering.

    Nine academics presented engineering projects.

Shenzhen’s deputy mayor, Wu Yihuan, said that the gross production in the advanced technology industry in Shenzhen has reached 48 billion yuan (US$7.73 billion) and is expected to surpass 200 billion yuan by 2020.

Five Sino-foreign joint universities have signed contracts to build campuses in Longgang District. Ten higher education institutions are negotiating contracts to build in the area.
