Lie down on the job
     2015-April-14  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Lie down是“躺下来”,on the job是“在干活、工

    作”。这个短语是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: When I walked past Tom’s desk, I saw he was checking out some funny video on his computer.

B: You mean he was lying down on the job, don’t you?

    A: Sort of.

Note: This idiom means “to do one’s job poorly or not at all” or “to not work as hard at something as one should. Normally people have to sit still, stand up or even run around to do their jobs. If someone is actually lying down while doing his job, you can almost be certain that he is loafing time away and taking a rest. For example: The new police chief fired two officers he accused of lying down on the job.
