Meaning:

    “拆” means to “dismantle,” and “二代” means “second generation.” In contrast to “富二

    代” (second-generation rich), this term refers to the group of people who became rich overnight after their family home were dismantled to give way to new housing estates because the developers had to compensate them with a huge sum of money. These are mostly people born after 1980 with family homes located in the near suburbs of cities and inherited from their fathers.

    Example:

    A: 猜猜我昨天遇到谁了？

    Cāicāi wǒ zuótiān yùdào shuí le?

    Guess who I ran into yesterday?

    B: 不知道。

    Bù zhīdào。

    No idea.

    A: 从前我们宿舍小林的表弟，这小子居然开着一辆玛莎拉蒂。

    Cóngqián wǒmen sùshè xiǎolín de biǎodì, zhè xiǎozi jūrán kāi zhe yīliàng mǎshālādì。

    The cousin of Lin from our dormitory. The kid is driving a Maserati. Just unbelievable.

    B: 他难道中彩票了？

    Tā nándào zhòng cǎipiào le？

    Did he win the lottery?

    A: 也差不多，城市扩张让他成了拆二代。

    Yě chàbùduō, chéngshì kuòzhāng ràng tā chéng le chāi’èrdài。

    Kind of. He was given a huge sum of money when his family home was torn down to give way to a new development.
