“THE Golden Era” dominated the 34th Hong Kong Film Awards with five wins, including best film, best director, best cinematography and best art direction. The film is a biopic of progressive female novelist Xiao Hong — played by mainland actress Tang Wei — in 1930s China.
It was the fifth time the film’s helmer Ann Hui won the best director award.
Sean Lau took the award for best actor for his performance in “Overheard 3,” a film about the strains a pre-handover property boom puts on the close bonds forged by three friends. Lau was also nominated in the same category for his work in “Insanity.” It was his second time crowned best actor after 16 nominations.
Zhao Wei of “Dearest” was named best actress. In the poignant story about a couple trying to retrieve their abducted son, Zhao played a rural mother in East China’s Anhui Province, whose foster daughter, acquired by her late husband by illegal means, was taken away to a State-owned orphanage.
Ivana Wong from “Golden Chicken SSS” won both best supporting actress and best new performer awards. The singer-songwriter’s foray into the film industry has garnered her three nominations in the best new performer category, plus a nomination in the best original film song category, marking a record for the most-nominated performer at the Hong Kong Film Awards.
Veteran actor Kenneth Tsang was named best supporting actor for his performance in “Overheard 3.” Tsang’s career has spanned five decades, with roles in the James Bond film “Die Another Day,” “The Replacement Killers” and “Rush Hour 2.” (SD-Agencies)
