Meaning:
“过” means “excess,” “劳” means “work” or “labor,” and “肥” means “obese.” This term, translated as “obesity from overwork,” describes the situation that many office workers become overweight, or even obese due to overwork, excessive sitting and pressure. Sleep inadequacy, an irregular and unhealthy diet, and a lack of physical exercises are the main factors that lead to obesity from overwork. This term may have borrowed from “过劳死” (karoshi), a Japanese term which means “death from overwork.”
Example:
A: 你最近吃了什么,怎么长胖了很多?
Nǐ zuìjìn chī le shénme, zěnme zhǎng pàng le hěn duō?
What have you been eating? Why have you put on so much weight?
B: 我天天加班,所以过劳肥了。
Wǒ tiāntiān jiābān, suǒyǐ guòláoféi le。
I’ve been working overtime daily. My condition is obesity from overwork.
A: 什么是过劳肥?
Shénme shì guòláoféi?
Obesity from overwork?
B: 工作压力大、饮食不规律、睡眠不充足导致肥胖叫过劳肥。
Gōngzuò yālì dà, yǐnshí bù guīlǜ、shuìmián bù chōngzú dǎozhì féipàng jiào guòláoféi。
This is caused by excessive pressure from work, an irregular diet and sleep inadequacy.
