HUNDREDS of police lined the streets Saturday as English Defense League members clashed with anti-fascist protesters as they marched through one of London’s most diverse towns.
But there was one officer who was — unwittingly — doing his part to break the tension.
The hashtag “hipstercop” began trending after one of the members of the force was seen sporting a typical “hipster” waxed moustache and beard.
A photojournalist, Guy Smallman, who was covering Saturday’s protest, tweeted a picture of the officer, which went viral almost immediately.
Since then, hundreds have re-tweeted the photograph with hilarious jokes making fun of the notoriously pretentious subculture.
He was even mentioned by a fellow policeman, Sgt. Nathan Shickle, who tweeted: “I’m standing next to #HipsterCop right now, having a good old chuckle at some of the captions.”
Many joked about hipster’s love of all things organic, artisanal or vegan with Mikey O’Leary tweeting: “I bring my pepper grinder to protests, only the finest artisanal pepper spray for my wrongful arrests.”
Mitten d’Armour wrote: “Hipster cop doesn’t drive a police car, he pursues rotten scoundrels on his up-cycled penny farthing.”
The identity of Hipster cop is not yet known, but he was one of the police officers who flanked the far-right EDL group as they paraded through Walthamstow, east London.(SD-Agencies)
