A 10-YEAR-OLD girl was killed on Tianbei Road 4 in Luohu District on Wednesday, and seven others were injured by a mental patient with a knife who is thought to have escaped from Kangning Hospital, Chinese-language media reported Thursday.
Armed police eventually shot the attacker, surnamed Lin, 36, a native of Guangdong, before detaining him.
This is the third similar attack in Shenzhen this month.
The slain girl was a student at Cuibei Primary School and her father was also injured while trying to protect his daughter from the attacker at 6:50 p.m. near Huagong Building in Tianbei Road 4 in Luohu District.
Kangning Hospital is a medical institution specialized in mental illnesses.
According to a witness surnamed Zhang, he saw a tall man with a knife chasing pedestrians.
In a separate attack last month, a mentally ill 29-year-old man, surnamed Li, injured four pedestrians near the Chaosheng Department Store on Nantou Street in Nanshan District on April 5.
Li came to Shenzhen for treatment of his mental illness. He picked up a kitchen knife from a roadside restaurant and began attacking people at random after leaving his family home without being noticed. Li had also been sent to Kangning Hospital.
Another mentally ill man Huang, 22, a native of Guangxi, attacked four people, including pedestrians and a stand owner at a night market before injuring himself in Gongming Subdistrict, Guangming New Area on April 25.
Police detained the 25-year-old man after a five-hour stand-off. Huang came to work in Shenzhen after eight months of treatment for his mental illness in Guangxi. (Han Ximin)
