Freebie
     2015-May-26  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

    Free字面解释是“免费的”,freebie是什么意思呢?请看对话:

A: Your new cup is cute.

B: Really? It’s a freebie. It came with two boxes of cereal breakfast.

Note: A freebie, or a free sample, is a portion of food or other product given to consumers in shopping malls, supermarkets, retail stores, or other venues. Sometimes samples of non-perishable items are included in direct marketing mailings. “Freeby” was defined in 1928 as “something for nothing, as complimentary tickets to a theater.” One possibility is that this is descended from expressions along the lines of “receive a sample free by mail,” common in advertisements in the early 20th century.
