‘Ecocapsule’ allows life anywhere
     2015-June-1  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

IT might look like a miniature space craft, but this petite pod could allow people to live anywhere in the world.

A company has created the Swiss Army knife of houses, which has everything residents would need to settle wherever they choose.

Capable of housing two adults, the compact “Ecocapsule” features an energy-efficient shape, running water, and an off-the-grid power source — thanks to solar, water and wind harvesting capabilities.

The capsule, designed by Slovakian firm Nice Architects, will be available to pre-order by the end of 2015, and the first capsules are expected to ship during the first half of 2016.

The first public display of the Ecocapsule was at the Pioneers Festival in Vienna, Austria, on Thursday and Friday.

Nice Architects said the capsule’s spherical shape can maximize the collection of rain water and morning dew. The capsule features membrane water filters to purify 99.99% of bacteria, rendering any natural water source suitable for drinking.

Hollow walls filled with high-performance thermal insulation help reduce energy consumption.

The company began working on the project in 2008, but it was not until 2014 that significant developments allowed them to create a prototype with long-term independency.

In a statement, Nice Architects said, “The key to a successful survival strategy is strict management of energy resources.

“Conventional houses can afford to lose several watts per hour, but for Ecocapsule this difference crucial.

“Long term independence is mostly matter of strategy — how to harness and reuse every kind of energy available.

“All these small tricks together are creating a system able to sustain itself without other resources for long periods of time.

“It can serve as a cottage, pop-up hotel, or even as a charging station for electric cars.”(SD-Agencies)
