TELEVISION’S greatest were honored Sunday night at the fifth annual Critics Choice Awards, hosted by Cat Deeley.
Among the night’s biggest winners were fan favorites Taraji P. Henson, Bob Odenkirk, Jeffrey Tambor and Amy Schumer. Meanwhile, HBO’s “Silicon Valley” and FX’s “The Americans” were recognized in the series categories.
Odenkirk thanked “Better Call Saul” creator Vince Gilligan for creating an “amazing, multifaceted, very rich role for me to take a swing at.” It was a good night for the “Breaking Bad” spinoff overall, as supporting actor Jonathan Banks took home the first award of the night.
“Empire” star Henson paid tribute to Fox for being bold. “You took a risk, and that’s what art is about. I take a risk every time I take a character,” she said.
After nabbing a Golden Globe earlier this year, Tambor’s hot streak continues. The “Arrested Development” alum thanked creator Jill Soloway’s parent, Carrie, for being the model for his trans character, Moira. The Amazon drama “Transparent” was also recognized earlier in the evening when “Happyish” star Bradley Whitford was awarded the guest actor accolade.
“The Americans,” the critically adored espionage drama that has been shut out of awards contention every year, finally scored a victory Sunday night.
“Silicon Valley” creator Mike Judge seemed genuinely surprised that his start-up culture spoofing series was voted the best comedy series. “This wasn’t supposed to happen. The odds were 25 to 1,” he said.
“Silicon Valley” co-star T.J. Miller nabbed the supporting actor trophy for his role as blowhard Erlich Bachman in the HBO comedy, too.
Seth MacFarlane was given the Louis XIII Genius Award.
