RE-ELECTED SZ MAYOR URGES QUALITY OVER SPEED
     2015-June-4  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

SHENZHEN’S re-elected mayor, Xu Qin, spoke about his vision for Shenzhen’s future as a developed city with a high standard of living at a press conference yesterday evening.

Xu said the major challenge for the 36-year-old city is switching from being a city known for its speed of development to becoming a city known for the quality of life.

“We are talking more about ‘Shenzhen quality’ instead of ‘Shenzhen speed’ at this stage,” said the mayor.

With new leadership elected for the Shenzhen government at the first session of the Sixth Municipal People’s Congress, Xu is setting his sights on making Shenzhen into a city of good quality, high efficiency and sustainability.

Xu said that Shenzhen will encourage small businesses while investing in industries important to the city’s future, like the new-energy industry.

Xu is confident that Shenzhen will have good economic development while keeping energy consumption levels low.

Strategies include better regulations and higher requirements for businesses.

The city expects to limit the amount of PM2.5 pollutants down to 30 micrograms per cubic meter. The international standard for PM2.5 is less than 10 micrograms per cubic meter while China has a standard of 75 micrograms.

The mayor also called for residents to take public transportation and save electricity in everyday life.

Xu will serve another five-year term.
