Feline joins owner on climbs
     2015-June-22  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

THIS is the story of a fearless feline, a domestic cat named Millie who would rather scale rocks and jump across boulders than lounge around the house all day.

Millie doesn’t need nine lives because she has no fear, according to her owner Craig Armstrong.

And ever since Millie climbed on Armstrong’s shoulders when she was just an abandoned kitten at an emergency shelter in Utah, the U.S., he knew he had found a new partner in adventure.

“Millie clearly has zero fear of heights,” Armstrong told the Mother Nature Network. “She’s walked precariously on cliff edges and jumped gaps from one boulder to another.”

“Her balance is amazing, and she never seizes up in fear.”

Armstrong, an avid climber, felt bad about leaving Millie locked up in the house and decided he would train her so she could accompany him on his trips.

He took Millie out to Stansbury Island in Salt Lake City so that she could get used to being outside in large open spaces, and drove her around so she’d become accustomed to his truck.

Their very first climb together was Joe’s Valley, where Millie was still “really tiny” and often jumped on people so she could climb up their shoulders.

Armstrong even bought Millie a harness that he attaches to himself when they ascend steep peaks.

Millie has successfully scaled some of Utah’s biggest climbing landmarks, including Moe’s Valley, Ferguson Canyon, and 1,000 Feet of Fun in the San Rafael Swell.

Millie has even descended Alcatraz Canyon, a feat only a handful of humans have accomplished, Armstrong said.

And Armstrong said she’s turned out to be the perfect climbing partner.

“She always wants to go higher, and she pushes herself hard,” he said. “But she also knows when to stop. She’ll find a cave or climb a tree and won’t move until she’s rested.”(SD-Agencies)
