    SHENZHEN tops Chinese cities in innovation and livability, according to results released yesterday in Hong Kong by the China Institute of City Competitiveness.

    Rankings compiled by the China Institute of City Competitiveness surveyed 358 cities for competitiveness and growth potential.

    This is the second year Shenzhen took the No.1 spot in innovation.

    Shenzhen’s focus on innovation is the reason it maintains the title, according to the institute.

    Shenzhen is rated No. 1 for livability thanks to its planning and eco-friendly living environment, according to the report.

    The competitiveness of mainland cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen have been greatly enhanced after the Chinese mainland’s opening up and reform.

    Hong Kong’s comprehensive competitiveness has consistently fallen in recent years when compared with other Chinese cities.

    Hong Kong has long relied on its core industries of finance, shipping, tourism and professional services.

    The city failed to offer enough support for organizations working in emerging industries, the institute said.

    Hong Kong is ranked No. 1 for competitiveness for per capita wealth. It is also the best Chinese city for food safety. Its rankings in comprehensive competitiveness dropped five places to 12th.

    Hong Kong was overtaken by Shenzhen in comprehensive economic competitiveness, according to a report by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in May, although Hong Kong still holds competitive advantages over many mainland cities.
