Woman sues KFC over suspected GM food
     2015-June-29  08:53    Shenzhen Daily

A SHENZHEN woman has taken KFC to court, seeking to force the U.S. fast-food giant to disclose if it uses genetically modified ingredients, a Chinese-language newspaper reported over the weekend.

“I think it’s KFC’s obligation to disclose to the public whether the food it serves contains any GMOs (genetically modified organisms) since the food is popular among children,” said the woman, surnamed He.

The woman became concerned after bringing her child to dine at a KFC in Luohu District last year and hearing that KFC uses GMOs.

GMOs are controversial in China because it’s thought they might harm children.

The woman is seeking a court order requiring KFC to place signs in all restaurants informing customers whether or not the food contains GMOs.

The lawyer representing KFC said that He had no evidence of food quality problems and also had no evidence that eating at the KFC had caused her losses. The lawyer said the case should be thrown out.

KFC’s attorney said that supervision of food quality is the responsibility of the government. KFC has no responsibility to state whether genetically modified ingredients are used in its products.

As He has refused to settle the issue out of court, the court will give a ruling later.

KFC has been in the media spotlight over its food quality in China. Last month it sued three firms for spreading rumors about KFC food on social media. One of the rumors said that chickens raised on KFC farms were genetically modified to have six wings and eight legs. (Zhang Xiaoyi)
