    YY

    wāiwāi

Meaning: This term, often used by Chinese netizens, is the short form for "意淫" (yìyín), a phrase invented by Cao Xueqin, author of Chinese classic novel "A Dream of Red Mansions." Cao originally used the term to refer to the selfless spiritual love his hero Jia Baoyu felt for his girl friends. In modern times, however, the term became equivalent to "sex fantasies." Chinese netizens have again changed the meaning of it, and use it to mean "good but unrealistic hopes, illusions and daydreams." In a word, the latest meaning of YY is to "imagine based on one's wishes."

    Example

    A: 我昨天又遇到小丽,她对我很热情。你说她是不是对我有意思啊?

Wǒ zuótiān yòu yùdào xiǎolì, tā duì wǒ hěn rèqíng。Nǐ shuō tā shìbùshì duì wǒ yǒu yìsī a?

I met Xiaoli again yesterday, and she was warm to me. Do you think she takes a shine to me?

    B: 你就不要YY了,小丽现在在保险公司做销售,她下一秒就要向你推销保险了。

Nǐ jìu bùyào wāiwāi le, xiǎolì xiànzài zài bǎoxiǎn gōngsī zuò xiāoshòu, tā xiàyīmiǎo jìuyào xiàng nǐ tuīxiāo bǎoxiǎn le。

Drop that illusion. Xiaoli is a salesperson with an insurance firm, and the next minute she will try to sell insurance to you.

    A: 我还以为我最近人品爆发了呢。

Wǒ hái yǐwéi wǒ zuìjìn rénpǐnbàofā le ne。

I thought I had run into extra good luck lately.
